WRITING A BIOGRAPHY

A biography is a description of a person's life. It should include only important events and information, leaving out minor details. This information is usually ( but not always) presented in chronological order. Remember the structure of a model biography:

OPENING ( Paragraph 1): introduces the people and explains what they are famous for.

BODY ( Paragraph 2 or 2 and 3) provides information about the people's early life, career and achievements, usually organised chronologically.

CLOSING ( Last paragraph): summarizes or talks about the people's latest achievements and includes future goals if known.

GETTING STARTED FOR YOUR COMPOSITION

1. Write the name, date of birth and nationality of the person.

2. Make a list of details about the person.

Make a list of adjectives you want to use and connectors of sequence, result, addition and example.

3. If you write about a person who is still alive, use the present perfect tense to talk about things he/she has done in her/his life.

GETTING ORGANISED

INTRODUCTION: Write the name of the person , her/ his nationality, when the person was born and why you decided to write about her/him

It doesn't have to be a famous person. You can write about anyone who is important to you or has influenced your life in some way.

Add some interesting details about the person to catch the reader's attention.

BODY: Write the information about the person in chronological order, talk about what the person has done and why you think this person is important.

CONCLUSION: Give some extra information, if possible about the person.

CHECKING AND REVISING.

Check the spelling and punctuation.

Think about the reader. Will s/he be interested in your introduction? Did you present all the information clearly and coherently?

Check the agreement between subjects and verbs.

Check the connectors and adjectives you used to talk about the person.
